What’s happening?
Some Windows 11 PCs that installed the January 2025 update are encountering a blue‑screen error that reads “UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME” before the operating system can load.
Root cause: Update chain reaction
Microsoft’s investigation shows the problem is not caused by the January update alone. Devices that failed to correctly install the December 2025 security update were left in an “improper state.” When the January update attempted to install on top of that broken state, the boot volume became unmountable.
Microsoft’s response
- Released a partial resolution that blocks devices in the improper state from installing further updates.
- Stated there is currently no fix for systems that have already entered the BSOD state.
- Continues to investigate why the December update fails on certain hardware.
What users can do now
- Do not attempt to reinstall the January update on a device that cannot boot.
- Use Windows Recovery Environment to roll back to a previous restore point, if available.
- Contact Microsoft Support for guidance on manual repair or re‑imaging.
Preventive steps for future updates
- Ensure the system fully installs each update before applying the next one.
- Keep a recent system backup or restore point.
- Monitor Microsoft’s update release notes for any known issues.
