What’s new?
Meta is rolling out voice and video calling for one‑on‑one chats on WhatsApp Web to users enrolled in the beta program.
How the rollout works
The feature has been in development for about a year and is now being released gradually. Only beta testers receive the call button in individual chats; group‑call support will follow later.
Key features
- Place voice or video calls directly from the browser without installing the desktop app.
- End‑to‑end encryption using Signal’s protocol, same as iOS and Android.
- Screen‑share option during video calls.
- Future support for up to 32 participants, call links and scheduled calls.
Security
All web‑based calls are protected by the same end‑to‑end encryption that secures WhatsApp on mobile, ensuring that only the participants can hear or see the conversation.
What’s next?
WhatsApp plans to expand the feature to all users in the coming weeks and later add group‑calling capabilities on the web platform.
