Waymo’s New Airport Service

After years of negotiations, Waymo announced that its robotaxis will begin picking up and dropping off passengers at San Francisco International Airport (SFO). The first phase will serve a limited group of riders, with full public availability planned for the coming months.

How the Service Works

Pick‑ups and drop‑offs are located at the SFO Rental Car Center, accessible via the AirTrain system. Riders will request a Waymo vehicle through the app, and the autonomous car will navigate to the designated curbside.

Expansion Plans

Waymo already operates across most of the San Francisco Bay Area, Silicon Valley, and several other U.S. cities, including Atlanta, Austin, Los Angeles, Miami, and Phoenix. The company plans to add more airport locations, such as San Jose Airport and Phoenix Sky Harbor, as regulatory approvals are secured.

Implications for Autonomous Mobility

The SFO launch marks a significant milestone for commercial autonomous transportation, demonstrating that large‑scale airport operations can be safely managed by self‑driving fleets. It also signals growing confidence from regulators and the public in Waymo’s technology.
