New Drag‑and‑Drop Tab Tiling

Vivaldi 7.8 makes tab tiling more intuitive by letting you drag any open tab onto the current page and drop it to the left, right, top or bottom. The placement is applied instantly, allowing you to build custom, flexible layouts without opening a separate tiling interface.

Key actions include:

  • Drag a tab to an edge of the viewport to tile it in that position.
  • Use the context‑menu “Open link in tiled tab” to start tiling directly from a link.
  • Tile multiple tabs sequentially to create complex side‑by‑side views.

Lock Pinned Tabs to a Specific Domain

A new option lets you lock a pinned tab so that any external link opens in a new tab instead of replacing the pinned content. Right‑click a pinned tab and toggle “Lock to domain” for granular control.

  • Preserves the layout of your pinned tabs.
  • Prevents accidental navigation away from the pinned site.
  • Can be enabled or disabled per pinned tab.

Email Client Now Works in Any Window

Previously, Vivaldi’s built‑in email client was limited to the first window. The 7.8 update removes this restriction, allowing the email client to be opened in any Vivaldi window, making multitasking smoother.

  • Access inboxes alongside any set of tabs.
  • No need to switch back to the “main” window.
  • Improves workflow for users who keep separate windows for work and personal browsing.

Customizable Start Page Backgrounds

The start page now supports daily rotating backgrounds powered by Unsplash, giving users a fresh visual experience each day.

  • Enable in Settings → Start Page.
  • Backgrounds refresh automatically.
  • Option to turn off for a static look.

Vivaldi’s Stance on AI Assistants

CEO Jon Tetzchner criticized the industry’s focus on AI‑driven assistants, saying they “filter what you see, decide what you don’t see, and outsource your judgment.” He emphasized Vivaldi’s commitment to tools that “amplify your ability to explore, compare, and think.”

This philosophy guided the 7.8 release, prioritizing stability and user‑requested features over speculative AI integrations.
