The Redmi K90 Max: Because Who Needs a Quiet Phone, Anyway?
The latest announcement from Xiaomi has left many of us scratching our heads, wondering if the company has finally lost its mind or if this is just a desperate attempt to stand out in a crowded market. The Redmi K90 Max is the first Xiaomi phone to ship with a built-in active cooling system, because what every phone user really needs is a tiny fan blowing air around inside their device. The fan itself is quite impressive in size, measuring 181mm in diameter, which Xiaomi claims is larger than most implementations. But let's be real, who doesn't want a phone that sounds like a miniature vacuum cleaner?
A Solution to a Problem We Never Knew We Had
Xiaomi's internal testing claims that the system can drop temperatures by up to 10C in around 100 seconds, which is certainly impressive. But is this really a problem that needed solving? The three adjustable fan modes and noise levels topping out at 32dB are a nice touch, but it's hard to shake the feeling that this is all just a gimmick. The all-metal bearing system and 50,000-hour aging test are definitely pluses, but it's hard to see how this will translate to real-world use.
The Technical Specs Are Actually Quite Impressive
Inside the phone, the MediaTek Dimensity 9500 chipset paired with an AIfocused discrete graphics chip called the D2 is a powerful combination. The support for 15K resolution at up to 165Hz is certainly appealing for gaming enthusiasts. The latest LPDDR5X Ultra RAM and UFS 41 memory standards are also a nice touch, as is the large 8550mAh single-cell battery with support for 100W wired charging. But let's not forget the camera setup, which is led by a 50-megapixel main sensor and an 8MP ultrawide lens.
The Display Is Also Worth Mentioning
The 6.83-inch flat display with a 15K resolution and a 165Hz refresh rate is certainly impressive. The M10 backlight technology and support for full-brightness DC dimming are also pluses, as is the low 1-nit brightness mode and dedicated eye protection setting for gaming. But it's hard to see how all these features will translate to real-world use, especially with the added distraction of a tiny fan blowing air around inside the phone.
The Warranty Is Actually Quite Generous
Xiaomi says buyers who pick up the device before May 5 will get a six-year warranty on the fan, along with lifetime free cleaning. This is certainly a unique selling point, and one that may appeal to some users. But it's hard to shake the feeling that this is all just a marketing gimmick, designed to generate buzz and get people talking. Only time will tell if the Redmi K90 Max will be a success or a flop.
