Introduction to Android Widgets
Android widgets were one of the main reasons I started using Android in 2010. I liked the idea of having a customized dashboard on my home screen.
Problems with Android Widgets
However, over time, I have become less of a fan of widgets. They often look and feel like they were not designed with a specific purpose in mind.
- Google's own widgets lack consistency and usefulness
- Third-party developers often create poorly designed widgets
- Widgets are not smart or contextual, they do not change based on my needs
Exceptions to the Rule
One exception is Google's At A Glance widget, which I find very useful. It provides me with the information I need, when I need it.
Alternatives to Widgets
I have found that using other features of Android, such as Quick Settings and app shortcuts, can be more useful than widgets.
- Quick Settings allow me to control my smart home devices without cluttering my home screen
- App shortcuts let me access specific actions within an app directly from my home screen
- Live Notifications provide me with contextual information, such as when I am using transit or driving
Overall, I believe that widgets are no longer a necessary feature on Android, and I would not miss them if they were to disappear.
