Design and Hardware Upgrades

The WF-1000XM6 builds on the XM5’s sleek silhouette but adds several hardware tweaks. Sony is moving from six to eight adaptive microphones—combining beamforming and bone‑conduction sensors—to improve voice pickup and environmental awareness.

The charging case is slightly larger to accommodate the extra microphones and a new upright earbud orientation, making it easier to grab and reducing the “flat‑lay” feel of previous models.

Active Noise Cancellation (ANC)

With the expanded mic array and a refreshed chipset, the XM6 promises smarter, more responsive ANC. Sony aims to match or exceed the performance of the AirPods Pro 3, delivering three listening modes:

  • Noise Cancelling – full ANC
  • Ambient Sound Mode – adjustable transparency
  • Off – no cancellation or passthrough

Audio Features

Audio quality gets a boost thanks to DSEE Ultimate, an upscaling engine that enhances both sample‑rate frequency and bit depth of compressed files—an upgrade over the DSEE Extreme found in the XM5.

Additional software features include:

  • Adaptive Sound Control
  • Quick Attention mode
  • Background Music Effect
  • Speak to Chat
  • Spatial Audio with Head Tracking
  • 10‑band equalizer in the Headphones Connect app

Connectivity and Battery Life

The earbuds support Bluetooth 5.3 with multi‑point connectivity, LE Audio, and Sony’s Auracast broadcast technology. High‑resolution wireless streaming is covered via the LDAC codec.

Battery expectations are eight hours of playback with ANC enabled, plus up to 24 hours total when using the fast‑charging, wireless‑charging case.

Pricing, Release Date and Availability

Sony is expected to launch the WF‑1000XM6 on February 12, 2026, in the United States with two finishes—Black and Silver. The suggested retail price is $329.99, a $30 premium over the XM5 and roughly $80 above the AirPods Pro 3.

How It Stacks Up Against Competitors

Compared to the AirPods Pro 3, the XM6 aims to deliver comparable ANC performance while offering richer codec support (LDAC) and more extensive customization via the Sony app. The price point positions it as a premium alternative for audiophiles who value Sony’s sound tuning and feature set.

Other Recent Leaks in the Audio Space

While the XM6 garners most of the hype, other notable leaks include:

  • Moto Buds 2 Plus – new taller case with upright earbuds; Bose handling sound tuning.
  • AirTag 2 – easier to disable the speaker, raising privacy concerns.
  • Oakley Meta HSTN smart glasses – $407.15 after a 15% discount, offering hands‑free audio and quick photo/video capture.
