What is PS2Recomp?

PS2Recomp is a newly announced tool that aims to statically recompile PlayStation 2 games into modern C++. The goal is to turn the generated code into a native PC port that can run with significantly better performance than any traditional emulator.

How Recompilation Differs from Emulation

Unlike emulation, which runs the original game files on a software‑based hardware layer, recompilation transforms the game into native code. This approach can deliver higher resolutions, new graphical options, alternative control schemes, and even mod support.

Other Recompilation Projects

  • N64: Recompiled – focuses on Nintendo 64 titles such as The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask, Banjo‑Kazooie, Star Fox 64, and others, offering drag‑and‑drop mod support.
  • XenonRecomp and XenosRecomp – target Xbox 360 games, with Sonic Unleashed mentioned as a starting point.
  • GameCube tools – have been used to help decompile titles like Mario Party 4.

Current Status and Future Outlook

PS2Recomp is still early in development and far behind tools like N64: Recompiled. However, recent viral attention has attracted developers who are lining up to test and improve it, and a Discord server is being set up. While no major changes are expected soon, the tool could become a critical piece of the broader game‑preservation effort.
