MediaTek Dimensity 9500s and 8500 Chipsets Launched

MediaTek has introduced its new flagship mobile chipset, the Dimensity 9500s SoC, and a mid-range Dimensity 8500 chipset. I got to try them out and here's what I found.

Dimensity 9500s Features

The Dimensity 9500s has an 'All Big Core' architecture and is made using a 3nm process. It comes with a primary Arm Cortex-X925 Ultra core that runs at 3.73GHz. There are also three Cortex-X4 premium cores and four Cortex-A720 performance cores. For graphics, it has an Immortalis-G925 GPU that supports advanced ray tracing and frame technology 3.0.

  • Supports up to 320MP camera sensor
  • 8K 60 full-focus video recording with Dolby Vision HDR
  • LPDDR5X RAM and UFS 4 storage
  • Wi-Fi 7, dual SIM dual active 5G, and Bluetooth 5.4

Dimensity 8500 Features

The Dimensity 8500 also has an 'All Big Core' CPU design, but it's made using a 4nm process. It comes with eight Cortex-A725 cores that run at up to 3.4GHz. It has a Mali-G720 GPU that offers up to 25% better performance and 20% lower power consumption than the previous generation.

  • Supports LPDDR5X 4-channel RAM and UFS 4 storage
  • MediaTek 8th-gen NPU (880) for large language and image generation models
  • Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.4, and dual SIM dual active 5G connectivity
  • Supports up to 320MP camera sensor and 4K 60fps video recording

I found some things that feel good about these chipsets, like the improved performance and power efficiency. However, I also found some things that feel weird, like the comparison between the 8500 and other chipsets.

Be careful when comparing the 8500 to other chipsets, as the results may be confusing.
