Requirements

To set up an AirTag you need an iPhone or iPad running iOS or iPadOS 14.5 or later. The second‑generation AirTag requires iOS/iPadOS 26.2.1 or later. Make sure iCloud Keychain is enabled and your Apple ID is fully configured in Settings.

Initial Setup

The quickest way to set up an AirTag is to follow the on‑screen prompt that appears when you bring the tag close to your device.

  • Choose a preset category (Keys, Backpack, Luggage) or select Custom Name to type your own label and pick an emoji.
  • After confirming, the AirTag appears under the Items tab in the Find My app.

Naming Your AirTag

Giving each AirTag a clear name makes it easier to identify, especially when tracking several items. You can change the name later in the Find My app.

Adding Multiple AirTags

If you have more than one AirTag, ensure only one is near your device during setup. If the system detects multiple tags, a notification “More than one AirTag detected” will appear. Move the extra tags farther away and retry.

Manual Setup via Find My

If the automatic animation doesn’t show, you can add the tag manually:

  • Open Find My → tap Add → select Add AirTag or Other Item.
  • You can store up to 32 items (AirTags, shared items, compatible accessories). Remove an existing item if you’ve reached the limit.
  • Lock and unlock your iPhone/iPad, wait about 15 seconds, and the setup animation should reappear.

Battery Replacement & Reset

AirTags use a standard CR2032 coin‑cell battery. If the tag won’t connect, replace the battery (takes about a minute). Should problems persist, reset the AirTag and repeat the setup process.

Choosing the Right Accessory

AirTags lack built‑in clips or adhesive, so you’ll need an accessory to attach them securely. Options include:

  • Key rings for keys
  • Luggage tags for suitcases
  • Wallet inserts
  • Bike mounts

Using Find My Features

After setup, the AirTag updates its location via Apple’s Find My network. You can:

  • View the last known location in the Find My app.
  • Play a sound to locate it nearby.
  • Use Precision Finding on supported iPhones for step‑by‑step guidance.

With a few minutes of setup and a clear label, an AirTag becomes a reliable way to keep track of important belongings at home or on the move.
