Overview
Yamagata Masakage is a tough early‑game boss that appears shortly after you become a time traveler. With only the Middle stance of Samurai Style available and limited gear, you must rely on precise timing, Ki management, and Ninja Style tools to survive.
Preparation
- Equip light armor to stay mobile.
- Bring a decent amount of Ki‑restoring items (e.g., Ki Potions).
- Ensure you have Shurikens and the Uncanny Flame Ninjutsu unlocked.
Combat Strategy – Hit‑and‑Run
Start the fight by observing Masakage’s moveset. Avoid attacking until you know his attack patterns and opening windows.
- Use short three‑hit light combos (Samurai or Ninja style).
- After the third hit, activate Ki Pulse (Samurai) or Mist (Ninja) to shorten recovery and retreat.
- Maintain high Ki; a depleted Ki bar will force you back to the Shrine.
Utilizing Ninja Style and Uncanny Flame
Ninja Style recovers Ki faster and lets you throw shurikens for burst damage.
- Switch to Ninja Style whenever Ki is low.
- Throw shurikens between combo windows to keep pressure on the boss.
- Use the Uncanny Flame Ninjutsu (requires four successful uses) to apply the Burn status for continuous fire damage.
Arts Proficiency and Living Artifact
Building Arts Proficiency is essential for high damage.
- Fast Ninja attacks fill the Arts Proficiency bar quickly.
- When the bar is full, unleash a powerful Arts combo.
- Mid‑fight you unlock Living Artifact (Triangle + Circle/Y+B). It grants temporary invincibility, adds Thunder element to attacks, and boosts both styles.
- Do not waste the gauge; use it for short, decisive bursts and keep it active as long as possible.
Summoning an NPC Ally
If you struggle, a Benevolent Grave near the Shrine can summon a weak NPC ally. The ally won’t survive the entire fight but can distract Masakage, giving you moments to heal or launch ranged attacks.
Final Tips
- Heal promptly when health drops; the fight is unforgiving.
- Avoid overextending after activating Living Artifact—Masakage can still block and counter.
- Keep your Ki topped up and your Arts Proficiency bar filled for consistent damage.
- Practice the timing of Ki Pulse/Mist to maximize distance after each combo.
