Why Users Are Leaving Discord

Discord announced a phased rollout of mandatory age‑verification checks for accessing age‑restricted channels and content. The move follows similar regulations in the UK, Australia, and recent data‑breach concerns, prompting many users to reconsider their Nitro subscriptions.

Understanding the New Age‑Verification Policy

The policy, first applied in the UK and Australia, will expand globally in early March 2026. Users may need to verify their age to change settings, join certain servers, or use specific commands. Privacy worries and a past breach affecting 70,000 IDs have fueled backlash.

Step‑by‑Step: Canceling Discord Nitro on Desktop

  • Open the Discord desktop app and locate the Settings icon (cog wheel) in the lower‑left corner.
  • In the left sidebar, click Subscriptions under the Billing section.
  • Find your Discord Nitro plan and click Cancel Subscription.
  • Follow the on‑screen prompts to confirm the cancellation.
  • Your Nitro benefits remain active until the next billing date.

Canceling on Mobile (iOS & Android)

  • Tap the You icon at the bottom right to open your profile.
  • Select the Settings cog wheel in the top right.
  • Navigate to Subscriptions under Billing.
  • Tap Cancel Subscription next to your Nitro plan and confirm.

Canceling via Web Browser

  • Log into Discord on a web browser.
  • Click the User Settings gear icon in the lower left.
  • Go to BillingSubscriptions.
  • Select Cancel Subscription for Nitro and confirm.

What Happens After Cancellation

After you cancel, you will retain Nitro features until the end of the current billing cycle. Once that date passes, your account reverts to the free Discord tier, and you will no longer be billed.
