The Issue: Limited Google TV Remotes

Google has adopted a minimalistic approach for its Chromecast and Google TV Streamer remotes. While they are small and ergonomic, they lack essential buttons, such as a profile switcher and a dedicated settings button.

For instance, the XGIMI Vibe One projector comes with a more useful remote, featuring a profile switcher and a dedicated settings button. This raises the question: why doesn't Google offer similar functionality for its official units?

The Reason: Convenience and Usability

The lack of a profile switcher and dedicated settings button can lead to frustration, especially in multi-person households. Having to exit apps and navigate to the home screen to switch profiles or access settings can be time-consuming and inconvenient.

A dedicated settings button, like the one found on the XGIMI Vibe One remote, allows for quick access to crucial settings, such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, without interrupting playback.

The Solution: Alternative Remotes

Fortunately, there are alternative remotes available that offer the desired functionality. The TW Electronics G10 reference design remote, used by the Walmart Onn 4K, 4K Plus, and 4K Pro, features a dedicated settings key, input switcher, and profile picker.

This remote is available on Amazon for $15.99 and can pair with any Google TV, including the official Streamer, over Bluetooth.

Other options, such as the Acer 4K UHD box remote, also offer similar functionality, with the addition of Google's new mandatory Live TV button.

By exploring these alternative remotes, users can enhance their Google TV experience and enjoy greater convenience and usability.
