Issue Overview
Recent reports from Reddit and other forums indicate that the latest Google Play Services beta (v26.04.33 – 260400-861456685) is causing a wave of crashes on launch for popular apps such as Shopify, Alexa, Messages, Calendar, Google Meet, and various banking applications. The crash occurs when the app attempts to establish a network connection.
Affected Devices and Apps
- Pixel 6a, Pixel 7 and other Pixel models enrolled in the beta program
- Some non‑Pixel devices (e.g., Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra) – though not widespread
- Apps: Shopify, Amazon Alexa, Google Messages, Google Calendar, Google Meet, major banking apps, and any app that initiates a network request on start‑up
How to Fix the Problem
If your device is running Android 16 QPR3 beta and you experience random crashes, follow these steps:
- Open the Google Play Services app page in the Play Store.
- Tap the three‑dot menu and select Leave the beta to revert to the stable channel.
- Alternatively, manually downgrade to an earlier beta build (e.g., v26.03.xx) if you wish to stay in the beta program.
- After leaving the beta, your device will receive the November 2025 stable Play Services build, which does not exhibit the crash.
What to Expect from Future Updates
Google is expected to release an updated Play Services beta that resolves the network‑connection crash. Until that update arrives, staying on the stable channel or rolling back to a previous beta version is the safest option for users who prioritize stability.
Additional Recent Issues
Pixel users on the stable Android channel have also reported problems with the January 2026 update, which reportedly broke Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth on a subset of devices. While not as widespread as the Play Services crash, it underscores the importance of monitoring beta releases and having a rollback plan.
