What's New with Google Discover?

Google has confirmed that it will continue using AI to generate headlines for certain stories in Google Discover. This feature was first tested last year and has now become a long-term part of the Discover feed.

How Does it Work?

The AI-generated headlines are applied to trending topics - stories that have been covered by multiple outlets. Instead of choosing one of the human-authored headlines, Google's AI tries to parse the details of the story and create its own headline.

What to Expect

These AI-generated headlines can sometimes be awkward, confusing, or wrong. You can identify these stories by looking for multiple outlet icons at the top of the card and a lack of a Follow button. Tapping on the card will open an AI-generated summary, and tapping on the outlet names will take you to a list of individual stories with their intended headlines.

Be Cautious of Misinformation

Since AI can be unreliable when it comes to understanding and relaying news stories, it's essential to be extra careful when getting news from Discover and watch out for AI-generated misinformation.
