Introduction to CachyOS' New Approach
CachyOS, the latest operating system to put Wayland first, has made significant changes to its setup process. The new ISO now prioritizes Wayland over X11, although it doesn't seem like X11 is being completely removed just yet.
Changes in the New ISO
The new ISO features a new installer and has been switched to Plasma Login Manager. The Live ISO now uses Wayland instead of X11. Additionally, the ISO contains both a Stable Kernel and an LTS Kernel to improve compatibility with newer devices and hardware.
Desktop Environment Changes
The Plasma installation now uses Plasma Login Manager instead of SDDM. If you opt for a Wayland distro, CachyOS will not install Xorg dependencies, which could be beneficial for those who have no plans to use X11.
Risk vs Reality
| Risk | Reality |
|---|---|
| Complete removal of X11 | X11 is not being completely removed, but its priority is reduced |
| Compatibility issues with newer devices | CachyOS now includes both Stable and LTS Kernels to improve compatibility |
Potential Concerns
- Lack of X11 support for users who still rely on it
- Compatibility issues with certain hardware or software
- Learning curve for users switching from X11 to Wayland
