Premiere Reception at Sundance
Apple reports that “The Last First: Winter K2” received a “gripping,” “engrossing,” “absolutely stunning,” and “perfect, surprisingly complicated documentary” response at its Sundance debut.
Director and Creative Vision
Directed by Amir Bar‑Lev, known for “Long Strange Trip” and “The Tillman Story,” the film continues his reputation for deep, character‑driven documentaries.
Synopsis
The documentary follows the 2021 winter K2 expedition featuring Icelandic climber John Snorri Sigurjónsson and the Pakistani father‑son duo Ali and Sajid Sadpara, who aim to achieve the first winter summit of the world’s second‑highest peak. Their climb intertwines with influencer climbers, commercial expedition clients, and Nepalese mountaineer Nims and his Sherpa team, exposing the evolving culture of extreme mountain climbing.
Apple’s Documentary Portfolio
Apple TV+ already hosts acclaimed titles such as “STILL: A Michael J. Fox Movie,” “Boys State,” “Come See Me in the Good Light,” and “The Pigeon Tunnel.”
Apple’s Sundance Success Record
Apple’s acquisition strategy has paid off before; in 2021 the company bought worldwide rights to “CODA” for over $25 million after its Sundance premiere, and the film later won three Oscars, including Best Picture.
Release Outlook
As of now, Apple has not announced a specific premiere date for “The Last First: Winter K2.”
