Stronger Lockout Mechanism

Google now lengthens the lockout interval after failed PIN, pattern, or password attempts, making brute‑force guessing roughly ten times harder than at launch.

Identical incorrect guesses no longer count toward the retry limit, preventing accidental lockouts caused by, for example, a curious child.

  • 15‑minute exposure on a Pixel yields only 7 guesses (down from 36).
  • Delay intervals increase more rapidly after each failed attempt.

Expanded Identity Check (Android 16+)

The “Identity Check” feature now covers every app that uses the Android Biometric Prompt, including Google Password Manager and third‑party banking apps.

  • Biometric verification is required for sensitive actions outside trusted locations.
  • Provides a uniform, high‑assurance gate across the OS.

Optional Security Question for Remote Lock (Android 10+)

Through android.com/lock you can set a security question that must be answered before a lost or stolen device can be remotely locked.

  • Adds a second factor of ownership verification.
  • Reduces the risk of unauthorized remote‑lock attempts.

Theft Detection Lock Enabled by Default in Brazil

New Android devices activated in Brazil now ship with Theft Detection Lock and Remote Lock turned on automatically.

  • Detects suspicious movement patterns indicative of theft.
  • Triggers automatic device lockdown and notifies the owner.
