Overview
The 9to5Google team captured screenshots of an internal Android 17 build that reveal a new blur layer applied to system elements. The effect replaces solid dark and light backgrounds with a translucent look, allowing underlying content such as wallpaper and app icons to be partially visible.
Key Visual Changes
Notable UI components receiving the blur include:
- Pill‑shaped volume bar – now sits on a translucent panel.
- Power menu – adopts the same blur treatment.
- Other system panels – similar effect to the notification and Quick Settings panels already seen in Android 16.
The blur carries a slight Dynamic Color tint for visual cohesion, and it is described as more subtle than Apple’s Liquid Glass design.
Performance Impact
Adding blur may increase resource usage, potentially affecting older Pixel devices. The actual impact will depend on the intensity of the effect and Google’s optimization. An accessibility option labeled “Reduce blur effects” could disable the feature entirely in Android 17.
Availability
The blur is not present in the current Android 17 Canary build, suggesting it is being kept under wraps. The first Developer Preview for Android 17 may appear in February, where the blur could be introduced.
