AI Detects Depression from Voice Notes
A study published on January 21, 2026 in PLOS Mental Health showed that a medical AI model could identify major depressive disorder with 91.9% accuracy in female participants. The AI only required a short WhatsApp audio recording of the person describing how their week went. The research was led by Victor H. O. Otani and colleagues at the Santa Casa de São Paulo School of Medical Sciences.
Chatbot Use Linked to Higher Depression Symptoms
Another study in JAMA Network Open analyzed responses from nearly 21,000 U.S. adults surveyed in 2025. About 10% reported using generative AI chatbots daily, and 5% interacted multiple times per day. Daily users showed roughly 30% higher odds of reporting at least moderate depressive symptoms, as well as increased anxiety and irritability. Researchers emphasized that the relationship is associative, not causal.
Tesla’s Optimus Robot Timeline
Elon Musk announced at the World Economic Forum in Davos that Tesla aims to begin selling its humanoid robot, Optimus, to the public by the end of 2027, provided the machines meet targeted reliability, safety, and functionality standards. Optimus, first unveiled in 2021 as the Tesla Bot, has already been used for simple tasks in Tesla factories, with plans to expand internal deployments later this year.
